What are your thoughts in this moment? Are you feeling happy, sad, maybe anxious? Is your environment very stimulating? How long and how restful was your sleep last night? What did you eat for breakfast today? Are you breathing deep or shallow? Did you go for that walk today? Did you know that the answer to all of these questions has a direct effect on your hormones? Our senses interact and respond to our external environment as our endocrine and nervous systems are constantly at work creating and processing hormones to maintain balance in our bodies. These hormones generate tiny chemical signals that relay messages throughout the body and influence almost every aspect of our wellbeing. These amazing chemicals control our growth, sleep patterns, mood, stress adaptation, immune system, metabolism and reproduction. Hormones also are related to how we build muscle, where we store fat and our ability to lose fat. The key to building muscle and losing fat is healthy hormonal balance. Your hormones influence the health of every cell in your body for example: your mood, memory, motivation, drive, intellectual capacity, lean body mass, visceral fat, blood sugar, libido, as well as sexual function. Your hormones give you the power to hold your center in the midst of everyday chaos. Balanced hormones give you the drive to move ahead with your passions in life. The inspiration to touch that which gives your life purpose and meaning in relationships, in your work and in your creative expression. Your hormones enhance your productivity – the ability to merge your strength and passion with a clear mind and apply your gifts and skills in the world.

1. Keep Stress Levels Low
Studies show that women who participate in daily meditation or yoga experience less hormonal swings

than those who do not mediate stress in some fashion. Rest is also important. Many women live fast paced lives that their bodies have little time to wind down from life’s demands. The natural hormone cycle is then affected. Make sure to find small ways to incorporate rest and relaxation throughout the day. We know that it is not entirely possible to stop stress and we need a certian amount to move us into action and keep us on our toes. However there is a natural balance. Studies have shown that stress affects the endocrine system in such a way that it throws off our hormonal balance, which can literally stop ovulation from happening as well as have the body hold onto body fat. Therefore, it is important to find ways to lessen the load and start chilling out.

2. Sleep enough at night
Sleep is when our body recovers from any imbalance it may have suffered throuought the day. Lack of sleep swings hormones into over-drive. If possible, try to go to bed by 10pm every night. If 10pm doesn’t work for your schedule, try to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. It is also important to get adequate sleep for optimum weight loss. The hormones leptin and ghrelin work to control feelings of hunger and fullness. Ghrelin, which is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates appetite, while leptin, produced in fat cells, sends a signal to the brain when you are full. So what’s the connection to sleep? When you don’t get enough sleep, it drives leptin levels down, which means you don’t feel as satisfied after you eat. Lack of sleep also causes ghrelin levels to rise, which means your appetite is stimulated, so you want more food.

3. Nourish yourself well
Try to incorporate more fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, plus an abundance of raw nuts and seeds into your diet. Foods such as processed carbohydrates, fried foods, soft drinks, enriched flour, processed vegetable oil and soy products may alter the delicate balance ofthe hormones. Also, avoid non-organic dairy products which may contain harmful bovine growth hormones, steroids and antibiotics. As a result, these added hormones and antibiotics reside in the milk, which interfere with the female hormonal system – most notably changing the way hormones are metabolized in the bowel and ultimately changing our hormone levels. Choose organic fish and meat when possible: non-organic animals are fed estrogenic steroids to fatten them which ultimately leads to estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance has been linked to some unpleasant conditions such as migraines, PMS, fibroids, ovarian cysts, infertility, weight gainh and irregular periods. For all those memory challenged women out there eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, a balance of protein and carbohydrates, and avoid alcohol, which only impairs memory. Certain foods have been linked with improved mental acuity including blueberries, salmon, flax oil, organic canola oil, walnuts and eggs.
4. Eat More Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Antioxidents

These fats act to create responsive and healthy cell membranes, allowing hormones to adhere to the cell more easily. Omega-3 fatty acids also aid the body in keeping the cellular receptor sites (where hormones bind) repaired and in optimal condition. Eat full fat products (skip fat-free products). Low-fat diets are one of the main reasons so many women have hormonal imbalances. Your hormones are made out of cholesterol. If you don’t eat enough cholesterol, your body can’t make hormones. If you are not eating sufficient amounts of fat and cholesterol, you could be exacerbating your hormonal imbalance. Natural, healthy fats include olive oil, coconut oil, butter, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish. The majority of the cell structure in the brain consists of omega 3 fats. As the brain continues to fix itself and grow additional neurons, it needs a good amount of these fats to be consumed. It is also to protect your brain with antioxidents. As people get older, substances called free radicals, which are floating through the bloodstream, will break down the brain cells. There are a good deal of antioxidant food sources to choose from. Antioxidants will merge with these free radicals, turning them harmless. Make sure you eat foods that have this healthy food source such as blueberries (other berries too), broccoli, carrots, garlic, red grapes, spinach, and tomotoes.

5. Exercise Frequently

Incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week, into your routine. It is important to find a routine that you can stick to on a consistent basis. Exercise increases circulating hormones which may help reduce some of those unpleasant effects of aging. Perhaps exercise may aid women who are experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and mood swings. We do know that increases in levels of estrogen and testosterone aid calcium absorption which is vital for our bones.

6. Let the Sunshine In

Giving your body a healthy dose of full spectrum sunlight can help stabilize hormones. Get out and take a walk around the block at least a few times a week. This will help get you the exercise you need, as well as the sunshine your body craves.

7. Eat throughout the day.

Three meals and two snacks a day are optimum. It is important that you have all of these meals. Small frequent feedings keep hormones in balance and prevent excessive hunger. You should try to eat some protein at breakfast or for your midmorning snack. This provides energy and quenches hunger later in the day. Lunch and the mid-afternoon snack should be light. Dinner is protein, starch and lots of vegetables. A snack at least two hours before bedtime is important to keep fueling your metabolism throughout the night. By following this advise you provide a constant low-level source of glucose (energy) to your body, and your body will not respond with a huge insulin surge, which can cause weight gain. Metabolism slows after a big meal, and sleep slows metabolism (and digestion) even more. Several studies have linked obesity to skipping breakfast. This can be from overeating the night before. Always start the day with protein because it has been shown to reduce hunger cravings and you’ll be less likely to overeat at both lunch and dinner.

May these tips support you to find balance in your hormones and ultimately in you life!

Spring Detox

Cleanse And Recharge For Radiant Health
External toxins from your environment are found in your foods, water and air. Pesticides, heavy metals and other pollutants bombard your body on a daily basis leading to many of the chronic illnesses we see today.
If your body has the proper nutrition in sufficient quantities and if the organs of elimination and detoxification are functioning at optimal levels, your body is able to eliminate these unwanted substances safely and efficiently via the main organs of detoxification (i.e., skin, bowels, liver, kidneys and lungs). Toxins are then eliminated through perspiration, bowel elimination, urination and respiration. However, if the body is taking in more toxins than it can safely eliminate, a state of chronic toxicity may occur. Most chronic illnesses can be attributed to the presence of unwanted substances in the body or the lack of needed substances in the body. When the body has been exposed for a prolonged period of time, it loses its capacity to detoxify at the same rate that toxins are being produced and ingested causing your organs to be weakened.
The presence of unwanted substances in the body is a very common root of illness.

Detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew optimum health.

Where Do I Begin?
First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical based household cleaners, laundry detergent and personal care products such as cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes and substitute natural alternatives.

Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the “adrenaline rush” to meet a deadline, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So it’s a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body. Yoga and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring.

A detox program can help the body’s natural cleaning process by:

1) Resting the organs through fasting;
2) Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
3) Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
4) Improving circulation of the blood; and
5) Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

Tips to begin Detoxing
Slow down on Sugar: refined sugar decreases your liver’s ability to detoxify toxins.
Bring on the Greens: veggies include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, swiss chard, bok choy, High in a phytochemical that promotes liver detoxification. Aim for 2 cups / day green vegetables.
Eat your Antioxidants: Aim for 1 Tbsp / day tomato paste and 1 – 2 cups / day dark berries.I eat organic berries to stay away from pesticides and herbicides.
Power on the Protein: Many of the biochemical detoxification pathways in the liver are protein dependent and will slow down with out adequate protein. Try a breakfast shake made with rice, pea or hemp protein powder blended with frozen berries and natural fruit juice.
Fill up on Fiber: Fiber keeps the bowels moving and traps fat soluble toxins that are being excreted with bile into the small intestine. Aim for 2 Tbsp / day of Psyllium or Rice Bran Fiber / day.
Take Time for Tea: Green tea contains anti oxidants, protective against certain types of cancers, helps rid the body of toxins. Aim for 2 – 4 cups / day.
Just add Water: Flushes unwanted toxins, keeps your brain sharp!
Aim for 1.5 to 2L / day.
Sweat it out: 30min of exercise a day will help to begin mobilizing fat soluble toxins. Aim for at least 20 to 30min a day during your cleansing. If you have access to a sauna this will enhance your body’s ability to sweat!
Foods to Lose:
Take at least one week to reduce and eventually eliminate regular tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol, junk food, fatty and fried foods, foods containing hydrogenated and trans fats, sugar and foods containing it, processed foods and foods with additives. Reduce and then if appropriate avoid dairy and wheat products.
Reduce your exposure to other toxins by using only natural products on your skin and for household cleaning.
Filter your drinking water and ideally your shower water too. Avoid exposure to all chemicals in your home and garden as much as possible.
Foods to Use:
Fresh fruit and vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, rutabaga ; whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds. Flavor with fresh herbs, turmeric and ginger.

I was in my late 20′ when my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I stood by her side through her operations, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. So many emotions were passing through me on a daily basis as I saw her struggle to stay afloat. I had this intense desire to leave my body, to flee as feeling my mother’s pain got more and more difficult. I wanted to be anywhere but where I was. To escape anxiety, sadness, and fear, food was the place I went to escape. As I studied to be a therapist many years later I realized that many people do this in different ways. Obsession, in any form; be it with food, with alcohol, drugs, shopping, with the future is an avoidance of the present. It is a way of passing time, a way to “get through” life. Not to live life, but survive it. I came to understand that ending my emotional eating meant resisting my ”inclination to leave.” I had to stay here, to sit with myself, my feelings. Just as I wouldn’t turn away from my mother who needed me, I had to be there for myself . I had to love myself just as much as I loved her. I promised the little girl and the adult parts of me that I was going to stick around for the hard parts and that I was willing to feel. I made an agreement to fully live in the here and now as much as possible. If I leave the moment when I feel uncomfortable, I am missing the opportunity to grow, to learn, to be strong, and to love myself. I tell you all of this because it is why I used food as love and comfort for most of my young adult life. I loved food, the smell, the taste, the sensation of it in my mouth and especially the way it numbed me. Amidst chaos and insecurity, I could control the kind and amount of food I ate. When I felt nervous, food was reassuring. When I was anxious food was soothing. When I was alone, food was my companion. At 31 years old I met the man I was going to marry and have a baby with. I knew one thing for sure, my developing fetus was going to grow in a healthy environment. A healthy environment did not include the extra 25 pounds I had gained in the last five years. That brought me to the gym for yoga and fitness classes and it’s what made me return day after day. I made a conscious effort to make healthy food choices and be present with my food. No more sitting with a bag of chips in front of the TV and wondering how the bag had emptied as I did not remember eating the whole thing. I just tried to get through each day feeling my best. I told myself I could do it today, just today. And I could do it one day at a time. That conversation made each day manageable. My dependency on food needed to come to an end. Within a year I arrived at my goal weight. My journey to that point was one awareness in each moment. When I was awake I could choose consciously what and how to eat. While eating consciously I realized that I needed a lot less to be satisfied. Now the question I asked myself was how do I live moderately? The answer was a mystery to me to be discovered as I brought more and more awareness to my old habits. Many people view their weight problem as the barrier to their happiness and success in life. They are certain that once they lose the weight their real lives will begin. Ultimately, the weight is not the problem, it is only a symptom. The larger issue is one of separation of the mind, body, and spirit. Food and weight obsessions are a calling to wholeness. Your weight problem is your spirits unrest manifesting in the world. When you’re obsessed with food and weight you are focused on your ego or small self. To truly put an end to this challenge, you must be willing to search deeper within yourself; within your heart. You are not who you think you are. You are not just a mother, wife, father, husband, employee or overweight man or woman. First and foremost, you are as spiritual being yearning to express your deepest, most expressed Self in the world. You are a co creator. True wellness is about so much more than your body. It involves every aspect of your being including your body, mind heart and soul. To create optimum health you must bring awareness and enhanced well-being to all of these areas. But how do you do that? The secret to permanent weight loss is to remember the Divine being that you really are. As Divine beings it is important for each of us to show up fully in life and share our unique gifts. Your capacity to share your gifts fully is dependent on your health and wellbeing. Increase your vitality and wellness, and you immediately increase your ability to show up more fully in life. You have come into this life with a mission to accomplish. It is only when you start to express and live fully that life begins to change in amazing ways. The path to permanent weight loss can be a wondrous path of self-discovery and spiritual transformation to recover this sacred, whole Self. Healing requires taking the disowned and discarded parts of you, and lovingly accepting them. It is by embracing your humanness that you discover your greatest strengths. Self-forgiveness paves the way to self-acceptance. Once you have recovered your authentic self, you are able to honor and use your gifts into the world to live out your ultimate mission with passion.
And you thought you just needed to lose some weight!
You think that a book, a diet, a workout, or a new romance is the answer to your weight problem. You come looking for answers, yet the answers are inside of you waiting to be discovered. I recommend that you take your attention and put it on yourself. Turn your gaze inward to find your Self. Increase your openness and trust and allow the radiance of you to shine.
You must begin to ask , are the stories and the beliefs I hold about myself really true? What am I afraid of? What is this obsession with food and weight really about? What am I avoiding by focusing on food and weight? How does my soul want to express itself in this lifetime? All that you are seeking lives within you. Looking outside of yourself creates a hunger that can never be satisfied through things outside of you. The source of your hunger is the part of you that is calling out for nourishment and expression. Your job is to listen to that w isdom inside of you. This wisdom knows how to satisfy your deepest hunger and it is not with food. You can hear this in the quiet moments. You will hear her in meditation, yoga, and in nature. You can feel this in the presence of each mindful breath. The greatest secret to weight loss is love of you. If you are ready to embark on this rich adventure, Dr. Julia DiNardo and myself have created an inspiring seminar that will support you to liberate the self and fall deeply in love with all the beautiful aspects of self (See Newsletter). There is such joy in this journey! You must not let your resistance and the fear of possibly feeling some pain stop you. Most people run as soon as they begin to experience a little discomfort. They never get to the source that is their freedom. This path requires courage. If you are willing to stay the course you will find it. Amazing things happen when you begin to align with your whole Self and connect to your higher purpose. You will find much support. You are never alone on this journey as the universe has a way of supporting you and giving you what you need. You will know you have reached this place when feelings of peace, harmony, and contentment are with you most of the time. Weight and food will no longer be an issue. You will be joyfully engaged in the dance of life. When you live fully alive, open hearted and expressed you will be filled with a sense of the wonder of a child.

Five Ways To Be Present During The Holiday Season
Are you one of those people who run around this time of year with a very long list, of things to do? Are you caught up in a whirlwind of decorating, shopping, cooking that may leave you stressed and exhausted? As conscious beings, we can allow ourselves to not get entangled in the web of holiday hoopla and focus instead on creating heart-centered connections, genuine celebrations, and harmony in the home. As spiritual beings, we are capable of infusing everyone and everything around us with our peaceful presence. Here are five suggestions for touching everyone you meet this holiday season with your authentic loving presence.1. Breathe and Surrender to What Is

Let go of expectations so to not be disappointed. Stop and take a moment to breathe deeply and surrender to what is so. Allow life to unfold in its own time. Go with the flow as each situation arises rather than resisting wchich can lead to energy blocks and dis-ease.Notice when you are in judgement and let it go. Be gentle and kind to yourself and this way it will flow out of you onto others.

2. Be grateful for all that is showing up in your Life

Life is ever-changing. We have the opportunity to see our challenges as opportunities for growth and evolution. It is also a time to re-evaluate what is truly important to us and prioritize. Our self-worth is not tied to the number of gifts we give, our employment status, or our personal relationships. This holiday season, allow gratitude to fill your heart even for the smallest blessings. Choose to focus each day on all that works in your life rather than what does not meet your expectations. Watch for the shift in what the universe brings to you after making the time and effort to do this. Be open to miracles!3. Help Others and Move Beyond Your Own Mind
If you are awake to what is around you, you will see that there are always avenues to contribute and make a difference. Be conscious of what is transpiring around you. You may be surprised at how many times you have the opportunity to give from your heart and grow as a person as well as change anothes life. Instead of giving expensive gifts give the gift of time by having a heart-felt conversation or write a note of gratitute.

4. Take Care of Yourself
Get your energy flowing and make sure to breathe some fresh air. Be conscious of the amount of holiday treats you eat. Moderation is the way to go. Get plenty of rest to allow your body to rejuvenate and heal for this busy time. It will be easier to appreciate all that life has to offer if you are relaxed and rested. When you are well cared for, you are able to give much more to others.

5. Connect to Divine Presence
Be aware ofthe here and now, and discover that this moment is perfect and sacred just as it is. Allow your self to receive the love, abundance, and support that are yours. After all, you are a spiritual being with infinite potential and every interaction leads you into a greater expression of your true self.

I wish you a magical holiday filled with optimum love for self and others!

First and foremost I would like to thank all who came out to play for our Self Care workshop last Sunday. Thanks to you all we had a full house filled with wonderful stimulating and motivating energy. Julia and I were left inspired in our lives due to all who stepped on the playing field with us andcreated a nourishing conversation. Why take care of self anyways? A major effect of poor self-care is that it can “cloud” our emotions. When we are tired, hungry, overly stressed out, or in bad physical shape, we may operate more from reactive emotions. For example, think about a time when you were feeling overwhelmed because of work, finances, or family. Did you find that it was harder for you to manage your emotions? Did you snap at people who may not have really deserved it? Did you find that you started crying for no apparent reason? Were you overly anxious and not sure why? If so then you likely were experiencing a cloudy emotional response that was fueled by poor self-care. Having cloudy emotions can interfere with us responding to a situation in an appropriate manner. Start by taking a nonjudgmental inventory of where things are at in your life. Make a list of all the demands on your time and energy (Work, Family, Home, Health, Volunteering). Try to make this list as detailed as you can. Eg: Under the

Work category, list the main stressors you see (number of clients, or, amount of paperwork, or difficult boss, etc). Once you have the list, take a look at it. What stands out? What factors are contributing to making your plate too full? What might you like to change most?

Start a Self-Care Idea Collection. Brainstorm a list of possibilities for better ways to take care of yourself. After choosing a few ideas that you can commit to implement these in your life in the next month. Ask a friend if they would share in a commitment to be mutually supportive.

Find time for yourself each day by rebalancing your work load. Do you work straight through lunch? Do you spend weekends running errands and

catching up on your week without ever having 20 minutes to sit on the couch and do nothing? Can you think of simple ways to take mini breaks during a work day? This could simply be that you have a ritual at lunch where you close your door and listen to 10 minutes of your favourite music. Make sure that you do one nourishing activity during each day for yourself: A warm bath with essential oils or epsom salts, a short meditation listening to a beautiful Cd or starring into a candle. A stroll in the park alone or with a friend (which is something I regularly nourish myself with). It helps me to connect with my core self. Even if iyou only have a few moments to take time for yourself each day, be in the moment when you are taking this precious time!

Delegate – learn to ask for help at home and at work. You do not have to do it all. Allow others the opportunity to contribute as well. Are there things that you are willing to let go of and let others do their way? Are you the person who ends up on all the committees at work? It can be draining to be the source of all help for all people. Mothers and caregivers especially know that learning to say no is fraught with self guilt? If so, this is something that may need exploring, perhaps with a counsellor. Think of one thing that feels right to say no to at this time. Conversely, maybe you have stopped saying yes to all requests, because you are feeling so depleted and burned out, feel resentful and taken for granted. Have you stopped saying yes to friends, to new opportunities? Take a moment to reflect on this question and see where you fit best: Do you need to say no or yes more in your life and to what? We know how important physical exercise is. Do you do it on a regular basis? Can you think of three small ways to increase your physical activity? Start with where you are at. You might want to park far from your destination, take the stairs instaed of the elevator, walk with your significant other after dinner to also connect or hire a yoga instructor to come to your work.

Don’t expect others to read your mind: consider holding a regular family meeting to review the workload and discuss new options. (I have implemented this more in the last year and find it very freeing). Also a gift for the kids (even though they might not see it at that time), to learn how to take care of a home.

Do you think you are good at setting limits? Send me your thoughts! Wishing you a nourishing fall!

Fall is the season of the harvest, when we gather nature’s bounty in preparation for winter. In the autumn equinox the days become shorter, and the darker, cooler season encourages us to slow down and conserve our vital energy for the coming months. It is a time to go within, complete projects, and open up to our inner wisdom through meditation, reading and writing. As the body slows down, any excess toxins that have accumulated in the system over the more active summer months will now attempt to make their way out through the eliminative channels of the colon, kidneys, lungs and skin. Allergies, colds, fevers and flu are nature’s way of getting rid of toxic wastes that usually originate in the digestive tract. Good bowel function is essential for clean tissues. This means that we should be having at least one to two bowel movements per day. For some people, bulking agents such as psyllium husks and ground flax seeds are also recommended.
Refined, processed, protein-rich foods such as pasteurized dairy products, fatty meats, white flour, sugar, salt and hydrogenated oils can be difficult to digest, and often stick to the lining of the colon, creating an acidic environment that is perfect for harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites to thrive. Processed foods are known for being filled with chemicals and loaded with salts and sugars. Preservatives and other chemicals are used in the manufacturing of such foods to enhance flavour, scent, color and shelf life. Too much salt causes the body to retain water which further clogs the body’s systems, while fat contributes to being overweight, which also overloads the body. When processed foods are eaten regularly, it becomes necessary to unclog the body through an internal cleansing program. During a cleanse, the foods that caused the toxic environment must be eliminated. If you have not made it yourself, chances are great that it is filled with ingredients that are not good for your health. When detoxifying you are encouraged to include fresh vegetables in most of your meals and have fruits as snacks. They digest best on their own. These fresh foods will help to cleanse your body of toxins. Eating too much meat will quickly clog your body’s systems. Since the nutritional requirement for protein for most adults can be attained through eating a piece of meat that is the size of a person’s palm, eating any more than that amount will slow the body’s system. Other healthy proteins that may be easier to digest are nuts, seeds, soy, beans, peas, and legumes.
Health begins by becoming aware of of your energy and it’s balance- what you take in and what you put out. What is important is learning to listen to yourself from the inside so that you do not become ill to change your life. Keeping your mind and body clear and open will allow more positive thoughts and an open heart will nourish all parts of you – mind, body and spirit!

Today I sit here with a heavy heart as yesterday my very dear aunt passed away. For a moment I am swept into the unfairness of life and the pain that is sometimes so hard to bear. I then remember all the lovely moments that I had the opportunity to share with my aunt over this past year. Like when we reminisced about how her and my uncle met and there was an instant connection that has lasted over 50 years. The time I told them that they can never think of separating as that would burst my bubble of eternal marriage bliss. As she got weaker we laughed, we cried. She inspired me as she beat leukemia twice over the last five years. She reminded me that as a child I called her a lion as she had a BIG roar. Her roar calmed down over the years, but her perseverance remained. The sadness is there and the gratitude stands tall beside it. The gratitude for having such wonderful people in my life. Through all the hardships this year there have been many nourishing lessons along the way. My husband John is one of my best teachers. Through our differences I am learning to have space for others who do not always think like me. (although I do not always understand why) ha-ha! My son Joshua is now 18 and reminds me all the time that he has crossed over into another level of manhood and deserves special privileges. From him I am learning another level of spiritual parenting. As Deepak Chopra states in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws for Parents “The easiest way to teach the meaning of spirit is to create an atmosphere in which spirit is breathed in as love. We taught our children to take spirit as a reality, to believe in an infinite source of love that held them dearly. Old practice of teaching through punishment and reprimand is to be avoided, he says. Setting yourself up as a punitive authority only emphasizes moral dilemmas you have not solved for yourself.” Being a child who always pushed the boundaries, Joshua has had me delve deep into the true meaning of parenthood and the old hurts that I still harboured from my childhood. As I keep inquiring into this role as parent I have much gratitude at the new perspective my husband and I have this past year and the opportunity that was created for me to heal my past childhood wounds. Clearly a quantum shift has occurred. Within this new empowered way of appreciating him for the gift of love and truth that he is, he is showing up truly inspired in life with his new found accomplishments. As I shared in my last blog, my younger son has health challenges and to him I am eternally grateful. Over Jacob’s eight year journey with nephrotic syndrome I have learnt that even though I am a Naturopath I am not in control of anothers healing. Some things are greater than me and I can only surrender to Divine healing power and let go of any expectations that I may have (some days are easier than others). So yes there have been challenges, but the question I ask myself is “what are the learning’s within the challenges?” and all I feel is much gratitude. I see that I have a choice to either focus on suffering, or on the pure miracles that each situation brings. So thank you to all that have touched my life this past year and opened my eyes to fresh new possibilities. Looking forward to the MAGIC of 2010!

Welcome to my first blog. Thanks for coming along for the ride…… It has been a testy month with my son being in and out of hospital. As a health consultant and mother I feel somewhat responsible for making sure that my son’s health is as optimum as possible. The more his body is challenged the more I feel helpless. I have been holding it together very well going about my days seeing clients and taking care of myself and my family. I know that if I do not take care of myself first, I will be useless to everyone else. Who decided that was selfish anyways? I feel like I am on a roller-coaster ride. When I am on my way up, I have a chance to catch my breath, come into the moment and focus on dealing with what is in front of me now. When I am racing downhill it seems somewhat more difficult to hold my center. Breath is shallow, heart racer a little faster and my mind is scattered. Where is the ground? Today my son is in the hospital with his Dad and I sit here wondering, thinking sad thoughts. My emotions engulf me and the tears begin to flow. Tears I have held back all month just handling what I needed to to be responsible in each moment. Many of our friends and family members called today to see how my son was doing. Each time I answered the phone I relived the emotions and tears began to flow once more accompanied by deep belly sobs. Relief, fatigue, exhaustion, want to rest, rejuvenate, regroup, be calm, and feel safe. Emotions began to flow through me instead of being stuck in me. I had allowed an incredible release to take place. My whole being surrendered to what was and relaxed into the fetal position that felt just as safe as in the womb. I discovered an incredible sense of trust in something greater than myself in that letting go moment. There is clearly a larger picture to what is showing up in our lives and we cannot see the whole only some of its parts. Surrender and trust are the whispers that come to me. I sit here in meditation knowing that it is important for me to keep walking my talk. How easy it is to take care of myself at the best of times-eating well, exercising, meditating and resting, but what about in these tough times. I know this is the easiest way through the eye of the needle and so I intend to take charge of my mind one moment at a time. Some moments are easier than others. Breathe I tell myself, deep into my belly. I need oxygen more that ever after many sobs and shallow breaths. I stop to quiet my mind so that I can hear the voice of higher guidance-this is a little tougher as my thoughts wonder to scary places. Let go, let go I tell myself. with great compassion. I know that I need to nourish myself and family well-I do the best I can with the energy I have each day. I know that great food equals great healing. It is time to sleep. I wish for a restful sleep for us all so that healing can occur-The angel prayers that we recite before bed are so calming, relaxing and remind us that we are not alone. Gratitude moves me as I think of all the wonderful souls who ongoingly send their love and prayers to our family. Focusing on the blessings keeps me out of the dark places in my mind. So how do I keep my center in the midst of chaos? By nourishing my cells with healthy foods, nourishing my mind with healthy thoughts, surrendering and trusting in all of life’s beauty and guidance, and allowing myself to be where I’m at, all ONE MOMENT AT A TIME!
